The Yellowbanks Dulcimer Society was formed in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1990. A small group of music enthusiasts met and began playing traditional Ionian (DAA) music on the mountain dulcimer. Their first meetings were held in churches and schools as meeting places could be arranged. The group began to grow and included mountain and hammered dulcimers, guitar, banjos, fiddles and other acoustic instruments. The following year the group decided to sponsor a festival to promote the playing of the mountain dulcimer. The first festival was held in 1992 and was quite a success as the strains of music floated across the breeze under the trees on the “Banks of the Ohio.” With the success of the first festival came more interest in the instruments and music and the group continued to grow and has included Mixolydian (DAD) tuning in their playing. They also realized the importance of continuing the festival with a variety of teachers and performers included each year. The 17th Annual Yellowbanks Dulcimer Festival will be celebrated in 2008 on June 6 and 7. We have been recognized by the Southeast Tourism Society for the third straight year for our festival. We will be featuring the following performers: Gary Sager, Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly, Bing Futch, Peggy Carter, Jeff Hames, and Kara Barnard, Come join us as we celebrate the dulcimer as Kentucky’s state musical instrument! The Yellowbanks Dulcimer Society meets on the 1st and 3rd Monday evenings at 7 p.m. We meet in room 309 at Owensboro Christian Church at 2818 New Hartford Road in Owensboro, Kentucky. We welcome beginner and experienced players in mountain and hammered dulcimer, guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin. . . Well any acoustic instrument! Come join in the fun of sharing music together. |
